To impart quality teaching at the undergraduate and post graduate levels in Civil Engineering in order to attain excellence and thus empower students to meet the technological needs and socio-economic challenges. Expansion and diversification of programs at post graduate level to suit technical advances in different specializations. The Department will make significant contributions to the technological and economical development of the state, region and nation.


  • More extensive industrial liaison and strengthening of need - based research activities leading to Doctoral and Post Doctoral research in various infrastructural and other emerging areas of Civil Engineering.

  • To evolve a system for the development of faculty members and other supporting staff in the department.

  • To promote and provide consultancy and testing facilities with a view to generate additional resources and to keep in touch with the latest demands of the profession.

Program Educational Objectives

PEO1. To provide students with the knowledge of Basic Sciences and Mathematics in general and Civil Engineering in particular so as to impart the necessary skill to analyze and synthesize the different problems in diversified fields of Civil Engineering

PEO2. To prepare the Civil Engineering Graduates to exhibit effective interpersonal skills.

PEO3. To provide opportunities to students to work in interdisciplinary projects across the various specializations of Civil Engineering and other disciplines.

PEO4. To create an understanding among the students regarding the values of life-long learning and to inculcate in them professional ethics, moral values and social concern.

PEO5. To create an understanding of professionalism, ethics, quality performance, sustainability and allow them to be professional leaders and contributors to society through their problem solving capabilities.

Civil engineering is perhaps one of the oldest branches of engineering and primarily deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment. Advances in this area have brought many specializations like environmental engineering, structural engineering, transportation engineering, urban engineering, materials engineering, survey and construction engineering etc. The students normally have a conceptual understanding of space and its utilization. The stress of the programme is in developing fluency in mathematics, physics, instrumentation, computers, management and economics. Civil engineers focus on design, construction and maintenance.

In today’s world the role of civil engineering is changing as issues of housing, urban development, planned cities and construction using alternative materials for cost reduction and appropriate usage of environment friendly materials etc gain attention. The students at RIET are inculcated into the scientific aspects of civil engineering with focus on the social demands and protection of environment.

The department offers a Post-Graduate programme (M.Tech) in Geotechnical Engineering, with an annual intake of 18 students. A well equipped laboratory is also established exclusively for the PG students, which facilitates fundamental soil testing and advanced geosynthetic testing. The laboratory is capable of accommodating the diverse forms of research works in the field of Geotechnical Engineering.
The lecture sessions and thesis works are guided by eminent faculty members.
